What you trade, and what you gain

Mammoth is bigger and taller at the top, topping out above 11,000 feet. Brian Head is smaller, quieter and easier on the budget. Its base elevation, near 10,000 feet, is the highest in Utah, so the snow keeps well, and recent seasons have run from early November into May.

  • Short lift lines and easy parking, even on weekends.
  • Two peaks: Navajo for beginners and families, Giant Steps for steeper runs.
  • Red rock scenery: the snow-dusted hoodoos of Cedar Breaks National Monument, right next door.
  • Value: Brian Head has been ranked Utah’s best-value ski resort, and kids 12 and under have skied free in recent seasons.

Turn it into a road trip

Mammoth pairs with the Eastern Sierra. Brian Head pairs with Utah’s national parks: Zion and Bryce Canyon are each within about 90 minutes of the mountain, and Cedar Breaks is an International Dark Sky Park a few minutes away. In summer, the lifts run for scenic rides and mountain biking, and the cabin is a cool 10,000-foot escape from desert heat.

The cabin

Trail Road Treehouse is a 1972 ski cabin restored as a 1970s lodge, with a fireplace, a king suite and a bunk room. It sleeps eight, so it works for a family trip or a crew splitting the drive from Vegas.
